How to Care for a Moroccan Wool Rug

A hand-knotted wool rug is made to last for years. With a few simple habits, it stays soft and beautiful.

Vacuum gently

Vacuum your rug regularly, but turn off the rotating brush, which can pull at the wool. Use suction only, and follow the direction of the pile.

Expect some shedding

A new wool rug may shed a little fluff in the first weeks. This is normal and fades with time. Vacuuming gently is enough.

Deal with spills quickly

Blot a spill with a clean cloth, pressing without rubbing. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the wool. Avoid harsh chemicals. For a stubborn stain, call a professional rug cleaner.

Rotate and air the rug

Turn the rug around every few months so it wears evenly and the sun fades it evenly. If you can, air it outside on a dry day.

Protect it from heavy points and sun

  • Use felt pads under heavy furniture legs.
  • Use a rug pad to keep the rug in place and cushion it.
  • Avoid keeping the rug in strong direct sun all day.

Deep cleaning

For a deep clean, use a professional rug cleaner who works with wool rugs. Do not use a steam cleaner at home.
