How to Choose the Right Size for a Moroccan Rug

The most common mistake with a rug is buying one that is too small. A rug that is too small makes a room feel smaller. A rug that is the right size ties the furniture together. Here is how to choose.

Living room

The simplest rule is that at least the front legs of your sofa and armchairs should sit on the rug. For a standard sofa, that usually means a rug of 240 × 300 cm (8 × 10 ft) or larger. In a smaller living room, 180 × 270 cm (6 × 9 ft) works well if the front legs rest on the rug. Leave a border of bare floor of about 30 to 60 cm around the rug so it reads as a deliberate frame.

Bedroom

Place the rug so it extends beyond the sides and foot of the bed, so your feet land on wool when you get up. For a queen bed, 240 × 300 cm (8 × 10 ft) placed under the lower two thirds of the bed is a good choice. Another option is two runners or two smaller rugs on each side of the bed.

Reading nook

A small rug defines the corner. 120 × 180 cm (4 × 6 ft) or 150 × 240 cm (5 × 8 ft) is usually enough for an armchair and a small side table.

Dining room

The rug should be large enough for the chairs to stay on it when pulled out. Measure the table, then add about 60 cm on every side.

Check before you order

  • Mark the rug size on the floor with painter's tape and look at it from the door.
  • Measure the space and the furniture, not just the room.
  • Choose the fringe: no fringe, fringe on one side or on both sides.
